Effect of Lexical Frequency and Neighborhood Density on Audiovisual Spoken Word Recognition

چکیده

The current study investigated how lexical factors influence the intelligibility of spoken words, and how those effects interact with visual information. A forced-choice word-identification experiment was carried out under auditory-visual and auditoryonly conditions with varying S/N ratios, and the effects of lexical frequency and neighborhood density on identification accuracy were analyzed. The results showed a significant interaction between frequency and modality: in auditory-only condition, words with high frequency (within the forced-choice options) were recognized more accurately, while in auditory-visual condition, words with low frequency were recognized more accurately. The effect of neighborhood density was also significant: words from dense neighborhoods were recognized more accurately than words from sparse neighborhoods.

Neighborhood density effects in spoken word recognition in Spanish.

The present work examined the relationships among familiarity ratings, frequency of occurrence, neighborhood density, and word length in a corpus of Spanish words. The observed relationships were similar to the relationships found among the same variables in English. An auditory lexical decision task was then performed to examine the influence of word frequency, neighborhood density, and neighb...

Effects of Multimodal Presentation and Lexical Density on Immediate Memory Span for Spoken Words

Working memory span for spoken words was measured using a non-repeated sampling procedure. Stimuli were presented in audio-only (AO) or audiovisual (AV) conditions. In the AO condition, participants were presented with only the audio track of a talker's voice. In the AV condition, participants simultaneously heard and saw a talker speaking a word. The stimulus words differed in their neighborho...

Tracking the Time Course of Word-Frequency Effects in Auditory Word Recognition With Event-Related Potentials

Although the word-frequency effect is one of the most established findings in spoken-word recognition, the precise processing locus of this effect is still a topic of debate. In this study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to track the time course of the word-frequency effect. In addition, the neighborhood density effect, which is known to reflect mechanisms involved in word identificati...

Phonotactics: a Review

Probabilistic phonotactics refers to the relative frequencies of segments and sequences of segments in spoken words. Neighborhood density refers to the number of words that are phonologically similar to a given word. Despite a positive correlation between phonotactic probability and neighborhood density, nonsense words with high probability segments and sequences are responded to more quickly t...

All Neighborhoods are not Created Equal: The Phonological P-Metric and Spoken Word Recognition

A great deal of work has shown that the size of the phonological neighborhood affects the speed and accuracy of spoken word recognition. Words with many similar sounding words (i.e., a dense neighborhood) are recognized more slowly and less accurately than words with few similar sounding words (i.e., a sparse neighborhood). However, little work has examined the structural differences that may e...
